Wide-Area Fresh and Waste Water Network

Our customer, a Southern California water district, wanted to eliminate staffing of outlying fresh and waste water plants during the evenings and on weekends.

The plan called for backhauling all process control and status information to a central monitoring location after the 8-5 shift. Analysis showed that our customer could save over $1 million in labor expenses over two years.

The customer required two to three T1 circuits at five remote sites to provide a redundant network capability. At an average lease rate of $700 per month, the annual lease rate for five sites would be $126,000.

Metric Systems Corporation provided this water district with the wireless capability to network six wide-area plants simultaneously to a common location.

The ability to create a broad band enterprise SCADA network enables this client to create and execute new process control and management strategies.

Key features of the system include:

  • Robust operation - eliminates single-link failures
  • Full duplex 10 mbps operation
  • Multi-terrain topology operation - desert, rural, urban
  • Continuous online network status and utilization monitoring
